To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department after what interval a right hon. or hon. Member can expect a substantive reply to letters concerning the immigration and nationality department; and if he will make a statement.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make it his policy to establish an independent complaints procedure for the immigration and nationality department.

The arrangements for dealing with complaints are currently under review in the light of the principles in the citizens charter. The arguments for introducing an independent element, which have not hitherto been found persuasive, will be considered in the course of that review.
