asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many people are in receipt of income support, what percentage of the population over the age of 18 this represents, and how many of the recipients are: (a) of pensionable age, (b) in receipt of a disability premium and (c) registered unemployed.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Social Security (Lord Henley)

The latest available figures show that there are 4.49 million' in receipt of income support (including 0.02 million' 16 and 17-year-olds). This represents 10.60 per cent.2 of the total population over 18.

  1. (a) The number of people receiving income support who were over pensionable age is 1.58 million'.
  2. (b)There are 0.45 million' in receipt of disability premium; and
  3. (c) The number of income support recipients registered as unemployed is 1.34 million'.

How many children under 16 were dependent on income support in (a) England and Wales and (b) Scotland; and what percentage of those under 16 each of these figures represents.

Lord Henley

The latest available figures are (a) 2.13 million' children under 16 are dependent on income support in England and Wales. (b) 0.24 million' children under 16 are dependent on income support in Scotland. These figures represent (a) 21 per cent.2 of the under 16 population of England and Wales and(b) 23 per cent.2 of the under 16 population of Scotland.
