§ Mr. WigleyTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will take up with the Peruvian Government the question of human rights abuses in that country; if he will arrange to raise these matters in the United Nations; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Garel-JonesI share the hon. Gentleman's concern. We take every appropriate opportunity to emphasise to the Peruvian authorities their obligations to respect and protect human rights. The Peruvian charge d'affaires is due to call at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on 22 May. When President Fujimori called on my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister earlier this year, he was left in no doubt about the strength of feeling in this country. The next occasion on which this matter might be raised at the United Nations would be the autumn meeting of the General Assembly.
