§ Mr. MichaelTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether the results of the 1986 inter-censual survey(a) in south Glamorgan and (b) other areas were used to supplement the results of the 1981 census in determining the factors considered in calculating the number of officers needed by the South Wales constabulary as part of his Department's recent review of police manpower.
§ Mr. Peter Lloyd[pursuant to his reply, 12 December 1991, c. 508]: I now understand from OPCS that an inter-censual sample survey did take place in Wales in 1986; there was however no survey in England. The results of the Welsh survey could not have been used to calculate the relative establishment need of the South Wales constabulary because the formula used to assess relative need requires comparable information for all force areas in England and Wales.
