A joint Treasury/ProShare survey carried out in January and February of this year shows that almost 10 million people, or over 22 per cent. of the adult population in Great Britain, now own shares, compared to 7 per cent. in 1979. Copies of the survey report have been placed in the Libraries of both Houses.
