§ Lord Molloyasked Her Majesty's Government:
Whether they are satisfied that the provisions of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 designed to protect non-human primates are working satisfactorily.
Earl FerrersYes. The Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 recognises the special position of non-human primates. Section 5(6) specifies that they should be used only where no other species is suitable for a proposed programme of research. This is a matter to which inspectors pay particular attention in considering applications for project licences.
