To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many claimants have had deductions from benefit entitlement under the compensation recovery scheme; and how much is(a) the average amount deducted and (b) the total amount reclaimed.

The total amount deducted and paid to the compensation recovery unit up to 31 May 1992 was £35.5 million. The number of claimants involved was 29,216 at an average of approximately £1,200 per case.
