For many years the prices of Parliamentary Debates were heavily subsidised. In 1983, when the annual subsidy stood at £6 million, Ministers decided progressively to reduce the level of subsidy required. As a result of this, and with more cost effective methods of production, the then Economic Secretary to the Treasury was able to announce last November that the latest price increases, together with plans to enable the reports of Commons proceedings to be "machine-read" by the HMSO presses (as is already the case for the Lords), should permit the final elimination of the revenue subsidy (Commons Hansard, 1st November 1991, col. 3).
