§ Mr. Kenneth CarlisleI have reports of two cases of electric windows in vehicles causing fatalities to children over the past six years, including the recent tragedy. Both accidents were caused by the children inadvertently actuating switches. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has now asked its members to review their designs and will shortly be meeting to discuss further action. I have asked to be kept informed of the outcome of these discussions. The vehicle inspectorate has also now examined the car involved in the recent tragedy, to determine whether there were any defects in the particular vehicle. It will shortly be reporting its findings to me.
