§ Dr. Goodson-WickesTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence whether a second phase of redundancies is planned for the Royal Navy.
§ Mr. Archie HamiltonI announced on 21 November 1991,0fficial Report, column 305–6, a total reduction of 569W 8,000 in Royal Navy numbers planned by 1995. In the initial phase of the exercise in 1992–93, 80 officers and 320 ratings were selected. I can now say that, in the second phase, approximately 450 officers and 700 ratings will be made redundant.
It is intended that personnel will be selected from categories in surplus, bearing in mind the need to maintain a balance of skills and experience. So far as possible the target will be achieved by voluntary means, but some compulsory redundancies cannot be ruled out if the correct seniority spread within the ranks and specialisations is to be achieved.
Detailed terms will be promulgated to the Navy and applications will be invited, to take effect between April and November 1993.
