HL Deb 02 June 1992 vol 537 c61WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why red band prisoners are appointed to clean, decorate and look after Christian chapels but not the accommodation reserved for other faiths.

Earl Ferrers

The allocation of prisoners to undertake the cleaning of chapels and of rooms used for religious observance by other faiths is the responsibility of the Governor of the establishment. "Red band" prisoners do undertake the cleaning of rooms used by other faiths in some prisons; this is particularly likely in new establishments where a room reserved for other faiths is provided in the Chaplaincy centre.
