HC Deb 16 July 1992 vol 211 c939W
Mr. Etherington

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence why troops were posted at Dykelands road polling station in the Sunderland, North constituency on 9 April.

Mr. Aitken

The Dykelands road polling station is situated within a Territorial Army centre occupied by 251 Field Ambulance (V). For security reasons it was necessary to position TA soldiers at the entrance in order to search the bags of those entering and to escort them to the room which was being used as a polling booth. Both male and female soldiers carried out these duties and they were unarmed.
