HC Deb 16 July 1992 vol 211 cc867-8W
Mr. Mackinlay

To ask the Prime Minister if he will introduce legislation to bring the administration of the Crown estate within a Government Department and subject to Ministerial responsibility.

The Prime Minister

No. The Crown estate is administered by the Crown Estate Commissioners under the terms of the Crown Estate Act 1961.

Mr. Mackinlay

To ask the Prime Minister if he is consulted on the appointment of the Crown Estate Commissioners.

The Prime Minister

Yes.

Mr. Mackinlay

To ask the Prime Minister when a Government Minister last met the chairman or members of the Crown Estate Commission in order to discuss the administration of the Crown estate.

The Prime Minister

The Chancellor of the Exchequer met Lord Mansfield, the First Crown Estate Commissioner, to discuss the Crown estate's performance and long-term plans, on Wednesday 10 July 1991.

Mr. Mackinlay

To ask the Prime Minister in what circumstances the Crown Estate Commission is liable to pay the uniform business rate on property and estates it administers.

The Prime Minister

Commercial tenants of the Crown Estate Commissioners are liable to pay the uniform business rate in the usual way. Where the Crown estate occupies buildings for its own employees, the commissioners make a contribution in lieu of business rates to the Inland Revenue Crown property unit. The level of the rate is determined by the valuation office.
