To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what information is held on the number of playing fields lost to supermarket developments over the last 10 years in England.

Mr. Key

There is no centrally held information on the loss of playing fields. However, the Sports Council's grant in aid for 1991–92 included a specific sum to cover the cost of preparing a national register of playing fields in England. This will provide a means of monitoring gains and losses in playing fields and should be completed at the end of May 1993.
