To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the prison population in(a) England and (b) Wales, at the latest available date.

§ Mr. Peter Lloyd
On Thursday 9 July the prison population in England was 44,831 and in Wales, 920. These figures do not include the 1,367 prisoners being held in police cells on that day.
