To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what statutory provisions relate to the disposal of plastic waste at sea; and if he has any plans to review current legislation.

The Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Pollution by Garbage) Regulations 1988 prohibit the discharge of plastics into the sea; these regulations are amended as necessary to implement any new MARPOL—marine pollution—73/78 convention requirements.
