§ Mr. WilsonTo ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will list the nuclear power stations in the United Kingdom, by type, giving the radius of the emergency planning zone in each case.
§ Mr. EggarThe information requested is as follows:
654W
Nuclear power station Type Emergency planning zone (Km) Chapelcross Magnox 2 Calder Hall Magnox 2 Torness AGR 3 Huntcrston A Magnox 2.4 Hunterston B AGR Dounreay Prototype fast reactor 5 Hartlepool AGR 1 Heysham 1 AGR 1 Heysham 2 AGR Wylfa Magnox 1.6 Trawsfynydd Magnox 2.5 Berkeley Magnox 1 Oldbury Magnox 1 Hinkley A Magnox1 3.5 Hinkley B AGR
Nuclear power station Type Emergency planning zone (Km) Sizewell A Magnox 2.5 Bradwell Magnox 2.4 Dungeness A Magnox 2.4 Dungeness B AGR The distances quoted are the radii of the detailed emergency planning zones around each nuclear power station in the United Kingdom. The size of these zones, formally approved by the Health and Safety Executive's nuclear installations inspectorate, is based on a "reference" accident for the reactor type in question. The reference accident is the maximum size of an accident that can reasonably be foreseen. On this basis, the size of the detailed emergency planning zone for steel pressure vessel Magnox stations is larger than for concrete pressure vessel Magnox and AGR stations. In the case of steel pressure vessel Magnox stations which have been de-fuelled—for example, Berkeley—the zone has been reduced. Some distances have also been extended where necessary to take into account local circumstances, topography and population distribution. This is particularly the case in Scotland.
