Mr. Steen

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many staff his Department currently employs; what are the total personnel costs; and if he will calculate the staffing level of the Social Security section of the former Department of Health and Social Security and the associated personnel costs, immediately before its separation.

Notes:

1. Included in personnel costs are salary costs of both permanent and casual staff, overtime as well as employers National Insurance costs.

3. The staff in post data is based on manual returns.

4. Separation of the Departments of Health and Social Security took place April 1989.
