HC Deb 14 July 1992 vol 211 cc646-7W
Mr. Steinberg

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will consider making catalytic converters compulsory on all new cars.

Mr. Kenneth Carlisle

To meet the stricter EC emission limits that will come into force on 31 December, virtually all new petrol-engined cars first used from that date will need to make use of three-way catalytic converters, whereas new diesel-engined cars will not. EC directive 91/441, which prescribes the limits, does not specify the technology by which those limits are met.
