§ Mr. SteinbergTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will consider making catalytic converters compulsory on all new cars.
§ Mr. Kenneth CarlisleTo meet the stricter EC emission limits that will come into force on 31 December, virtually all new petrol-engined cars first used from that date will need to make use of three-way catalytic converters, whereas new diesel-engined cars will not. EC directive 91/441, which prescribes the limits, does not specify the technology by which those limits are met.
