Mr. Darling

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many applications for British citizenship under section 4(5) of the British Nationality Act 1981 have been(a) made, (b) granted and (c) refused in each quarter since January 1991; and how many of those granted have been on the grounds of service in the armed forces.

Mr. Charles Wardle

Five applications were received in May 1991 and two in December 1991. Of these, two have been granted, three have been refused and two have not yet been decided. Neither of the two granted was on grounds of service in the armed forces.

Mr. Darling

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his best estimate as to how many applications for(a) adult registration with entitlement, (b) naturalisation and (c) registration of minors his Department (i) will receive and (ii) expects to grant in 1992–93.

Mr. Charles Wardle

The latest estimate of the numbers of citizenship applications likely to be received and granted in 1992–93 is as follows:

Intake Applications granted
Adult registration 4,000 4,000
Naturalisation 25,000 28,500
Minor registration 5,000 9,500
Total 34,000 42,000
