HC Deb 13 July 1992 vol 211 c419W
Mr. Blunkett

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the number of staff employed in directly providing advice, research and policy development for Ministers in his Department; and what is the cost of such staff for the last year for which the figures are available.

Mr. Nelson

As noted in my departmental report—Cm. 1918—some 860 staff in central Treasury are engaged in the process of providing policy advice to Ministers. CCTA—the Government centre for information systems-also employs a further 300 staff in non-support roles, bringing the total to 1,160. The pay costs of these staff amount to some £28.4 million.

These figures do not include staff in central support services within central Treasury and CCTA. Staff in Forward—the civil service catering organisation—and in Chessington computer centre—which deals largely with payroll—have also been excluded.
