Mr. Paice

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the actual amount spent by each education authority on school transport for 1989–90; and if he will give for each authority the percentage of pupils entitled to free school transport and the number of pupil miles provided.

Education authorities' expenditure on home to school transport in 1989–90 is shown in the table. Information on the number of pupils entitled to free transport and on the number of pupil miles provided is not collected centrally.

Expenditure on home to school transport covers local education authorities' costs of their own drivers and vehicles, and their payments in respect or public transport and contract hire, used to transport pupils from home to nursery, primary and secondary schools and to special education schools or other establishments.

2. The figures are derived from authorities' returns of their spending to the Department of the Environment. N/A indicates that a return was not received.
