HC Deb 16 January 1992 vol 201 c627W
Mr. Alfred Morris

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make a statement on his Department's current policies in regard to the treatment of breast cancer.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

Our objective is to reduce morbidity and mortality from all forms of cancer. The aim of the national breast screening programme is to detect cancer at an early stage when treatment offers the best prospect of success. The treatment of each individual is a matter for discussion between her and her doctor.

Developments in treatment are kept under review by the Department's expert advisers on cancer; and the Government are supporting the "Europe Against Cancer" programme, which pools experience across the Community in the fight against this disease.
