HC Deb 16 December 1992 vol 216 cc305-6W
Mr. Richards

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what measures are being taken to inform teenagers in Wales of the dangers posed by AIDS.

Mr. Gwilym Jones

At national level the Health Education Authority's UK HIV/AIDS mass media campaign, comprising TV and cinema productions together with radio advertising, continues to target amongst others, young people.

In Wales a wide range of health promotion literature about HIV/AIDS is made available by the Health Promotion Authority for Wales, which also specifically targets young people, through education projects undertaken from within its healthy sexuality programme.

The Welsh Office has made additional funds available to district health authorities for the appointment of health promotion officers dealing with the prevention of HIV/AIDS. These officers undertake a range of activities aimed specifically at young people, including the development of young persons clinics, visiting youth organisations, schools and higher education centres.

In schools, the national curriculum programme of study for science contains a requirement to teach secondary age pupils about HIV/AIDS. The Welsh Office makes grant available to fund teacher training and the appointment of county advisers in health education, including education and HIV/AIDS.

A guide for the education service on HIV and AIDS has been issued to all schools in Wales.
