§ Mr. AllenTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the names of all the police forces which have had an increase in police numbers for the coming year, giving the reasons in each case.
§ Mr. Charles WardleIn light of the need to impose constraints on public expenditure, my right hon. and learned Friend has concluded that the costs of further increases in police numbers cannot be justified. He has therefore not approved an increase in establishment for any provincial force in 1993–94.
The establishment of the Metropolitan police will increase by 50 officers with effect from 1 April 1993. This increase was agreed to as part of the 1991 public expenditure settlement.
