To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what was the total number of hospitals in Wales in 1979, 1991 and 1992.

There were 173 hospitals open in Wales as at 31 December 1979 and 145 as at 31 December 1991. The number has not changed since. In the same period, the numbers of in-patients, out-patients and day patients treated have increased significantly.
