HL Deb 07 December 1992 vol 541 c4WA
Lord Brougham and Vaux

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why, following recent remedial works, the east end of St James's Park Lake remains stagnant and smelly; and what they propose to do about it.

Viscount Astor

The remedial works referred to were to remove silt and to repair cracks in the concrete lining. The problems experienced with water quality this summer were due to the presence of high levels of nitrogen waste products in suspension in the water caused by defecation by the waterfowl.

A review of the waterfowl stocking policy is being carried out and it is likely that the number of birds will be reduced. Means of degrading the nitrogen products are being investigated and will be implemented when finance permits.

The grounds maintenance contractor has instructions to remove surface debris daily as part of the birdkeeping duties.
