To ask the Secretary of State for Transport when he now expects to publish the survey of the A38 undertaken by his Department; when the survey was originally intended to be published; and if he will make a statement.

[holding answer 1 December 1992]: The study into the long-term needs of the A38 between Exeter and Plymouth, which was announced in the White Paper "Roads for Prosperity", was always regarded as a longer-term project, and no date for its commencement or completion was set.

I now intend to invite fee competition bids for this study early next year.
