HC Deb 01 December 1992 vol 215 cc142-3W
Ms. Primarolo

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the AIDS support grant for 1992–93 and 1993–94; and if she will make a statement.

Dr. Lynne Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to her answer of 19 November to the hon. Member for Langbaurgh (Mr. Bates),Official Report, column 387, what reasons underlie the reduction of specific grant for AIDS/HIV from 1992–93 to 1993–94; and what assessment she has made of the effects this will have on service provision (a) in England, (b) in the west Midlands and (c) in Birmingham.

Dr. Mawhinney

The AIDS/HIV specific grant is £15.3 million for 1992–93 and £12.4 million for 1993–94. The grant will continue to support a maximum 70 per cent. of expenditure. For 1993–94, the grant will be targeted more effectively on those local authorities most in need of support and the funds thereby released will be used for other important priorities. The Department is currently considering how best to target the grant in the light of individual authorities' needs.
