CVOs are normally appointed from the same regiment or corps as the deceased and have expert local knowledge of welfare facilities both within the MOD and outside.
Lump sums were paid as appropriate to the estates of the service men under the provisions of the armed forces pension scheme which cover the death of serving soldiers who leave neither a widow nor a child eligible for a family pension.
