To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many refuges for battered women there are; and how many places exist.

According to information provided by the Women's Aid Federation (England) Ltd., there are an estimated 200 independent women's refuge groups in England, some of which are responsible for two or more premises. It is not possible to estimate the number of places because of variations in occupancy rates and family size.
