To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make a statement on road construction projects in the north-east since 1979.

Mr. Chope

Since 1979 the Government have completed 60 major improvement schemes on the trunk road network in the north-east at a cost of some £241 million. The details are:

In addition, the A66 Bowes to county boundary scheme is currently under construction at estimated cost of £12.4 million and £31.5 million has been spent on smaller improvement schemes.

Schemes planned and in preparation will cost an estimated £245 million. Details of local authority road construction projects are available from the relevant local authority.
