To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how much Her Majesty's Government are spending on roads and railways today; and how much was being spent in 1978–79.

In 1990–91 about £4.5 billion was invested in roads and railways; the equivalent figure for 1978–79 on the same price basis, was just under £2.7 billion.
