HC Deb 14 October 1991 vol 196 cc109-10W
Mr. Spearing

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) when he received any request for the installation of level-crossing style barriers on the north bound approaches to the Blackwall tunnel to stop its use by north bound traffic at a time of emergency; what response he has made; and if he will make a statement;

(2) what problems have arisen in respect of non-mandatory advisory signs of a motorway type on by-passes, trunk roads and tunnels that are not designated motorways.

Mr. Freeman

I know of no general problems in respect of such signs other than those discussed when I met the hon. Member at the Blackwall tunnel last month. The Department is aware of suggestions to provide a means of stopping northbound traffic entering the tunnel in the event of an emergency and is investigating various alternatives.
