asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many of the 1,053 claims which have not been settled under the Crown Proceedings (Armed Forces) Act are still outstanding for each of the years 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991.

The Earl of Arran

Of the 1,053 claims referred to, 1,013 remain open: 56 from 1987; 191 from 1988; 303 from 1989; 293 from 1990; 107 from 1991; and 63 for which the date of opening is not recorded.

How much compensation has been paid in total in respect of the 235 cases under the Crown Proceedings (Armed Forces) Act which have been accepted and settled, and what has been the highest settlement.

The Earl of Arran

A total of £1,996,702 has been paid in respect of the 235 cases settled. The highest settlement was £303,340.75.

In respect of the 331 cases under the Crown Proceedings (Armed Forces) Act which have not been pursued further by the claimant or have not been settled, how many servicemen (i) withdrew their claims; (ii) withdrew because they could not prove negligence; and (iii) withdrew because they did not have sufficient funds to proceed.
