Mr. Garel-Jones

The Madrid conference was an important step towards peace in the middle east. We congratulate the United States Secretary of State on his achievement. We look forward to the early resumption of bilateral talks between the parties and to the launching of broader discussions of regional issues in which we expect to play a part. We shall continue to do all we can to ensure the success of the process.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when he next intends to visit the middle east to discuss the prospects for peace in the region; and if he will make a statement.

My right hon. Friend has no immediate plans to visit the middle east.
