§ Mr. FearnTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what information his Department has on the number of people without permanent accommodation or in temporary accommodation for each local authority area in the first three quarters of 1991;
(2) what information he has on the number of people in private sector housing provided by each local authority in the first three quarters of 1991;
(3) what information his Department has on the number of people in temporary bed-and-breakfast accommodation for each local authority area in the first three quarters of 1991.
§ Mr. Yeo[holding answer 14 November 1991]: The available information relates to households dealt with by local authorities under the homelessness provisions in part III of the Housing Act 1985, which is reported quarterly to the Department.
I have today placed in the Library a table for the second quarter of 1991—the latest available—showing (a) the number of households who applied to local authorities under the homelessness provisions of the 1985 Housing Act, (b) the number for whom local authorities accepted responsibility to secure permanent accommodation (c) the number in temporary accommodation at the end of June and of those, (d) the number in bed-and-breakfast accommodation and (e) the number in private properties leased by local authorities and (f) the number which having been accepted remain in their current accommodation until permanent accommodation becomes available.
Additionally the number of persons sleeping rough on census night was published by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys in its "Supplementary Monitor on People sleeping rough", a copy of which is in the Library.
