§ Mr. Chope[holding answer 11 November 1991]: A total of 113,000 HGV's were inspected at the roadside during 1990–91, and a similar number will be inspected this financial year. All these vehicles are checked for excessive smoke. Wherever possible vehicles are selected for roadside checking where they appear to be emitting a high level of smoke.
