HC Deb 11 November 1991 vol 198 c408W
Sir Michael McNair-Wilson

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what discussions have taken place between himself and representatives of the United Kingdom transplant authority about improving the system by which health regions exchange human organs; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Dorrell

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State discussed this matter during a visit to the United Kingdom transplant support service authority on 7 November. Human organs for transplantation are allocated by the authority in accordance with criteria agreed by the medical profession. The authority has arranged for meetings with the profession to consider ways of improving the system to ensure that organs available for transplantation are distributed as effectively and equitably as possible.
