§ Mr. StrangTo ask the Secretary of State for Health how many non-haemophiliacs in the United Kingdom have contracted HIV infection as a result of contaminated NHS blood/tissue transfers; and how many of those became infected before the introduction of the screening of donations in October 1985.
§ Mrs. Virginia Bottomley[holding answer 5 November 1991]: There have been 50 reports in England, Wales and Northern Ireland of HIV infections in people who received blood or tissue in the United Kingdom before screening of donations was introduced in 1985. There have been no reports of infection occurring due to blood transfusion since then. One HIV infection occurred in 1986 due to tissue transfer.
