§ Mr. HinchliffeTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) how many private sector tenancies were available annually, within the United Kingdom, for each year since 1979;
(2) what number of private sector tenancies were available annually within (a) England and (b) Yorkshire and Humberside, for each year since 1979.
§ Mr. YeoThe available information relates to the number of private sector tenants who had been living in their accommodation for less than a year, as estimated from annual labour force surveys (LFS). Since some households will have moved more than once in the previous year, the total number of tenancies that became available each year will have been higher than the numbers shown in the table.

- 1. The table shows moves in the 12 months before the time of interview, which was at some point between March and April each year.
- 2. The LFS is a sample survey so the estimates are subject to sampling errors. For Great Britain and England the estimates are probably accurate to about 20,00 households either way up to 1983 and 30,000 either way from 1984 on. For Yorkshire and Humberside they are probably accurate to between 5,000 and 10,000 either way.
- 3. The LFS was biennial until 1983 and there was no survey in 1980 or 1982.
