§ Dr. David ClarkTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, pursuant to his answer to the hon. Member for South Shields of 20 May,Official Report, column 398, why he is unable to give the number of confirmed cases of BSE in the United Kingdom for each month from January to April.
§ Mr. GummerThe scientific calculation of the number of cases of BSE is based on the date of onset of clinical disease and there is a prolonged period of time between this and eventual confirmation of disease by post-mortem examination. This means that recent figures are necessarily incomplete and would therefore be misleading.
§ Dr. David ClarkTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what proportion of cases of BSE in 1991 have been found in farms for the first time.
§ Mr. GummerTwenty-seven per cent. of the cases of BSE confirmed in Great Britain between January and April 1991 were on farms on which no previous case had been confirmed.
