To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the cost so far to(a) the Metropolitan police and (b) his Department of the inquiries into alleged Nazi war criminals living in the United Kingdom; what is the estimated cost of further investigations during the next 12 months; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Patten

The cost of the war crime inquiry, which was set up by the Home Office to investigate allegations that war criminals were resident in this country, was in the region of £460,000. It is estimated that police inquiries are likely to cost in the order of £700,000 in this financial year.
