Mr. Cousins

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the number of hospital episodes for hip fractures distinguishing between men and women, and women aged over 75 years nationally and in each health authority region, in each year since 1980; and what is his estimate of the total annual national cost of these procedures.

[holding answer 30 April 1991]: Information is given in the table about the estimated numbers of discharges and deaths from 1980 to 1985 and finished consultant episodes between 1987–88 and 1989–90 for hip fractures. Information is not available centrally on the total annual national cost of these procedures.
