Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what percentage of(a) university and (b) polytechnic students undertook work placements as part of their academic courses for each year since 1976;

Information on universities is contained in the annual publication "University Statistics—Volume One—Students and Staff" published by the universities' statistical record. The numbers of students in each university and the numbers on sandwich courses for the academic years 1980–81 and 1989–90 are given in table 12. The numbers of sandwich course students in earlier years were published in "Statistics of Education—Volume 6—Universities" published by the University Grants Committee.

The numbers of students on sandwich courses in English polytechnics, as expressed as a proportion of total full-time and sandwich course enrolments, for the years 1976–77 to 1989–90 are shown in table 1 below. Data on the numbers and percentages of students on sandwich courses in each polytechnic in England for the years 1987–88 to 1989–90 are shown in table 2.
