To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement on the Government's policy in Wales on the knacker industry; and what representations he has received.

I am aware of the concerns of the knacker industry. It is central to our waste disposal practice and for many years has provided a vital service. A Community directive agreed last November lays down harmonised rules about the disposal of animal waste. We have secured, against the opposition of other member states, provision for the knacker trade to continue in its present form at least until 1995 and then the possibility of continuation after that date.
