HC Deb 21 March 1991 vol 188 c225W
Mr. Gregory

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he has any plans to amend the ingredients regulations concerning fish products.

Mr. Maclean

I have just issued for public consultation proposals for new controls on fish products. The main provisions of the proposals:

  1. (a) require all fish products as defined to be labelled with a declaration of the average fish content;
  2. (b) require a declaration of the presence of minced fish if present in amounts greater than 10 per cent. of the total fish content; and
  3. (c) define the term 'fillet' and permit its use in labelling and advertising to indicate its proportion in the final product.

Once enacted, the proposal will also revoke the Food Standards (Fish Cakes) Order 1950.
