HC Deb 21 March 1991 vol 188 cc221-2W
Mrs. Heal

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what information he has about subsidies available to pig farmers and horticultural farmers in the Netherlands which are available through(a) the European Community and (b) the Dutch Government; whether those in (a) are available in the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Curry

European Community price support arrangements for pigmeat and for horticultural products apply in both the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

The Government do not keep comprehensive details of the national subsidies and other state aids available to farmers in the Netherlands and other member states, since to do so would not be a cost effective use of resources. All state aids are, however, subject to the provisions of articles 92 to 94 of the treaty of Rome, and member states are required to obtain the Commission's approval in advance for new state aids and modifications to existing aids and to cannot be provided on a United Kingdom basis because Northern Ireland's land tenure system is not generally comparable with that of Great Britain.
