To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list the Number of permanent staff employed by the AFRC in 1984 and in 1991; and if he will make a statement.

There were 5,660 permanent staff in post at AFRC-funded institutes and AFRC central office on 1 April 1984.

The figure for 1 April 1991 is estimated at 3,225, including 450 staff who are employed by AFRC but seconded to Horticulture Research International.
