§ Mr. WareingTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer when he expects the United Kingdom balance of trade to be in surplus.
§ Mr. Mellor[holding answer 13 March 1991]: As domestic demand pressures have eased, the visible trade deficit has fallen sharply. In the three months to January 1991 the deficit was £3.1 billion compared with a peak of £6.6 billion in the second quarter of 1989. A revised forecast will be presented on Budget day.
